Much as I love the bluesy rock vibes of Wide Mouth Mason, one of my favourites of my favourite band is this slow, emotive, melancholic ballad that makes me want to have a warm drink and a satisfying book to read and relax on rainy days like today. The last few bars of vocals always gets to me.

Throwback Track Thursday: “No Such Thing” – John Mayer
The rhythm of the riffs takes me back to the days of music communities and discussion boards, using videocassettes to tape live performance footage to rewatch later. The first few bars of this song are memories and are especially memorable to me. I remember first seeing John Mayer perform in a small club where it was easy to get to the front and use the small raised stage as a makeshift table for drinks while one marvelled at his mastery of his acoustic guitar up close.
Throwback Track Thursday: “All I Want” – Toad the Wet Sprocket
Sometimes, I wonder if kids today will look back at this era of music decades from now and still enjoy the artists of the day as much as kids in my day look back to the music and artists of the 80’s and 90’s. There are so many songs from that period that I either know the lyrics by heart or, at the very least, sing the chorus convincingly! I miss songs like “All I Want” by Toad the Wet Sprocket. And bands with interesting names!
Throwback Track Thursday: “Too Close” – Next
Back in the day, there seemed to be many R&B/pop vocal groups like Riff, Hi-Five, Boyz II Men, and Next. Just as music seems to cycle through genres, reminiscing on the music of that day has me wondering and waiting for the reinvention of these groups sometime soon.
Throwback Track Thursday: “Return of the Mack” – Mark Morrison
Having chosen so many playlists from the 1990s on SongPop2, it’s no wonder so many songs like this one have me wondering what ever happened to distinctive voices like the one Morrison has?
Throwback Track Thursday: “Together Forever” – Rick Astley
There are some songs I listened to so often, be it on the radio, homemade mix tapes, or music videos of the day that their music and lyrics are part of my long term music memories. Rick Astley’s song is one of those songs, long before there was an idea of Rick-rolled!
Throwback Track Thursday: “Iesha” – Another Bad Creation
This song introduces a number of groups produced by Michael Bivens of Bell Biv Devoe, including my favourites of them all… Boyz II Men!
Throwback Track Thursday: “More Than Ever” – Nelson
Reminiscing about my youth with a friend, this song came to mind.
Throwback Track Thursday: “Billie Jean” – Michael Jackson
There is just something about a rhythmic bass line.
Throwback Track Thursday: “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection – Nelson
The hair. The guitar kicks.
